What is the process of registering a salvaged vehicle? +
A salvaged vehicle needs a smog certification and a brake and light inspection before it can be registered, and the vehicle must be verified once it is registered. You will also need the salvage certificate and receipts for major replacement parts. Brake and light certificates are now issued electronically — paper ones issued on or after September 28, 2024 are no longer accepted.
I’m transferring my car to my son or daughter do I need to smog it in order to transfer or not? +
No. Transfers between immediate family members — parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, sibling, spouse, or domestic partner — are exempt from the change-of-ownership smog requirement, so you do not need to smog the car to transfer it. One caveat: this exempts the transfer only. If a regular every-other-year smog is already due on the registration itself, that still applies.
How long does it take to process my renewal? +
Same day, if you bring your paperwork in before 1 PM — otherwise it is completed the next business day. We can also process your renewal and hand you the sticker within minutes for an additional fee. Bring your renewal notice, or just your plate number and the last five digits of your VIN, plus a smog certificate if your notice says one is due.
